Dad’s Root Beer, one of America’s most popular soft drinks, was developed in the 1930s by partners Barney Berns and Ely Klapman in the basement of Klapman’s Chicago-area home. The first trademark registration was filed on September 24, 1938, granted on February 14, 1939 to The Dad’s Root Beer Company of Chicago, and alleged use since February, 1937. Dad’s unique and delicious flavor earned a loyal following. The Dad’s Root Beer brand was famous throughout the Midwest and by the late 1940s, was one of the most consumed brands of root beer throughout the United States. Jules Klapman, son of co-founder Ely, successfully took the Dad’s brand international. The name Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer was selected in honor of Ely Klapman’s father, and other fathers, who used to make root beer at home for their families (popular in the early 20th Century).
Dad’s Root Beer distinguished itself as a brand and industry innovator when it became the first product to use the six pack format invented by the Atlanta Paper Company in the 1940s. Dad’s also introduced the half-gallon bottle, becoming the first brand to market this size. Dad’s was marketed as a family. “Junior” bottle size was the smallest, 7, 10 or 12 ounces. “Mama” was a quart bottle, and “Papa” was a half gallon bottle. (The image of the young boy featured on the “Junior” size bottle is Barney Berns’ son, Gene Berns.) A common promotion in the 1940s was the 1 cent sale – purchase the Papa half gallon at regular price and get the Mama quart for 1 cent.
The Klapman and Berns families sold all rights to the Dad’s name and logo to IC Industries in the 1970s.The Monarch Beverage Company of Atlanta acquired Dad’s from IC Industries of Chicago in 1986. At that time Dad’s was distributed by the Coca-Cola bottler network, sold 12 million cases annually, and held the second largest share of the root beer category behind A & W.
In 2007 Dad’s Root Beer was purchased from Monarch, along with the Bubble Up, Dr. Wells, and Sun Crest brands, by Hedinger Brands, LLC and licensed to The Dad’s Root Beer Company, LLC. The company headquarters is now located in Jasper, Indiana.
Dad’s Root Beer is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012.

As of August 1st, 2000, Urban Juice and Soda Company Ltd. officially changed its name to Jones Soda Co (“JONES”). The story of the company began in 1987 when company founder Peter van Stolk recognized the potential of emerging “alternative” products in the beverage industry.
The company’s start in the beverage world was not as a manufacturer of its own brand, but as a distributor in western Canada of other successful lines, including Just Pik’t Juices, Arizona Iced Tea and Thomas Kemper sodas. By 1994, Jones was firmly established as a full line beverage distributor in western Canada, with a reputation for picking winners.
Jones Soda Flavors
Utilizing its experience and knowledge gained in the distribution industry, JONES decided to create and distribute its own brands. In 1995, JONES created two brands of its own: WAZU Natural Spring water, launched in April 1995 and Jones Soda, launched with six flavors in January 1996. Jones Soda has been recognized and awarded for its unique packaging that features constantly changing labels that are generated and submitted by its consumers. In 2000, Jones Soda Co. launched its own version of an energy drink, named WhoopAss.
Distribution of Jones Soda began with what we call our “alternative distribution strategy.” Jones Soda Co. placed it own coolers, bearing their signature flames, in some truly unique venues, such as skate, surf and snowboarding shops, tattoo and piercing parlors, as well as in individual fashion stores and national retail clothing and music stores. Following the execution of the alternative distribution strategy, Jones began an up and down the street “attack” of the marketplace; this time placing product in convenience and food stores. Finally, the company began to achieve larger chain store listings with companies such as Starbucks, Panera Bread, Barnes & Noble, Safeway, Target, Cost Plus, Meijers, Winn-Dixies stores, Albertson’s, and 7-Eleven stores.
Jones Soda has also incorporated unique marketing initiatives in its strategy. The Jones RVs on both the East and West coasts travel through cities in North America handing out soda and talking to the people on the street.
Jones Soda has always been about the people and interacting with the consumer. From the ever changing photos on our labels to the our website, www.jonessoda.com, Jones Soda has created a cult following and is a passion not only among soda drinkers but with its employees, directors and shareholders.
Run with the little guy… create some change.

“If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere else.” -Marvin Gaye
On February 21, 1958, a designer and artist named Gerald Holtom rendered the Peace Symbol to support the 4 April march organized in London by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War. The Peace Symbol has, universally, come to symbolize peace. The Peace Symbol is not something to be messed with, to be exploited or to be trivialized. The Peace Symbol is the very inspiration behind the creation of Peace Tea. Yes, Peace Tea is a product meant to be bought and enjoyed. However, that is not the point. Peace Tea was not brought to life to commercialize or rip off or capitalize on the Peace Symbol. There are fashion brands, bands, record labels and countless other examples of products which utilize the Peace Symbol.
Peace Tea was born out a yearning for a higher calling. It is all about one single and perfect and fundamental truth: To evoke an emotion, or perhaps even more importantly, an action.
Peace Tea is whatever you want it to be.
Peace Tea is based in the true meaning of Peace. Peace is a balance of a deep understanding in yourself and between others where a mutual respect results by accepting differences, displaying tolerance, erasing tensions and allowing each and every person to have a voice, an opinion, a right to be who and what they want to.
While Peace Tea is a product, it is a product that stands for social obligation, social awareness, benevolence, compassion and soul. It can, in the form of a mere liquid, be your own form of poetry, art, music, philosophy, belief system. But more than anything, Peace Tea strives to be a product that makes a difference. Even the most minimal difference.
If even one person reaches for a can of Peace Tea and thinks into what Peace is all about and is motivated to act, then Peace Tea has fulfilled its reason for being. Perhaps that very person sees their reflection and is moved enough to do something in their day that benefits someone or something. Peace, compassion and generosity can come in the smallest acts. It can be buying a meal for a person living on the streets; helping a blind person get across a busy boulevard; helping an elderly person off an airplane; taking the time to lift the spirits of a friend who is down and struggling; helping a lost dog find its owner. It can be anything. Like the bumper sticker says, it can be about “practicing random and senseless acts of generosity and kindness.”
Peace Tea is a product with a purpose. A product to believe in. Peace Tea is Peace, Love and Understanding.
Peace Tea is love over gold.
